First OLPC Prototype - the $100 laptop

The first working prototype of OLPC(One Laptop Per Child a.k.a. $100 laptop) is announced by MIT.

OLPC prototype

I love the idea of OLPC. It makes it possible for poor children to own a computer, although $100 is still VERY expensive for most of them. The laptop is powered by Linux, or Fedora as see on the screenshot.

“Is that a toy?”, that was my first impression. I strongly suggest that the development team get a real good product designer for the OLPC. Though it is for poor children, it should look good too.

What is OLPC?

…(it) will be a Linux-based, with a dual-mode display—both a full-color, transmissive DVD mode, and a second display option that is black and white reflective and sunlight-readable at 3× the resolution. The laptop will have a 500MHz processor and 128MB of DRAM, with 500MB of Flash memory; it will not have a hard disk, but it will have four USB ports. The laptops will have wireless broadband that, among other things, allows them to work as a mesh network; each laptop will be able to talk to its nearest neighbors, creating an ad hoc, local area network. The laptops will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data.

I wonder if this notebook will be available in nearest superstore like Servey, Giant and BestMart? I am sure they won’t sell $100 in Malaysia due to transportation and gorverment fee. The gorverment of Malaysia should do something about this if I am right. :)

I want to purchase this. But I don’t know where to buy it from!
